After KDE 3.5

Postby bicol_willem » Sat Oct 10, 2009 4:31 pm

Now KDE 3.5 has reached "end of life", will we soon see a BL sporting KDE 4.* or maybe a other desktop environment?

Bye bye 3.5 ... I will miss you!

I guess it will depend on whether KDE 4 is polished enough for general use and whether or not it will run on machines that do not have a 3D graphics card. I sincerely hope that its as snappy as 3.5 though.

Yes understood. I do run (as a test) some distro's sporting KDE4+. Not unlike many I am not impressed. Too complicated in some ways. Also too "flashy" to my taste. It's like trying to beat Vista on its own field of bloat ...
But KDE 3+ might sooner then we think run in problems as apps keep being updated but not (or not for) KDE 3+. As a result "issues" come along. Take as sample Kopete which doesn't work properly any longer in 3. More apps will likely soon follow this sample. This next to (lack of) security updates.
I am looking at Gnome, LXDE and Xfce more those days then ever, to see if that can be a alternative, for I simply don't like KDE 4 (so far that is). One thing Xfce (and sure LXDE) is: Fast!
Well, we'll see what's next ;)
