Bayanihan Linux 6 (codename: Diwata) Development

Postby rage » Thu Jan 27, 2011 10:06 am

Hi,

Today I'm starting this new topic about the development of the upcoming version 6 release "Diwata" to be based on Debian Squeeze. As always, we encourage you to give us feedback regarding what you would like to be improved in the current release and anything else you might want to see in the next release. Please stay on topic though.

We'd like to invite everyone to participate in the development. Whether in coding, documentation, artwork, etc. Your work will be welcome. We'd love to hear ideas on how to improve the collaboration between developers and users. And how we can best build the local Linux community by encouraging active participation in free/open source projects and generating more awareness about free/open source software.

So that's it for now.

This is a list of software we include in Bayanihan overriding/updating the default in Debian stable:

1. Linux kernel 2.6.37/38
2. Mozilla Firefox web browser
3. LibreOffice productivity/office suite
4. WINE emulator
5. HPLIP printer configuration utility
6. bayanihan-themes
7. bayanihan-settings
8. bayanihan-skel
9. bayanihan-fonts
10. bayanihan-government-forms

Let me know if you want to include something in the list and we'll see if it can be done.

Diwata will still ship with KDE4 as default desktop for a number of reasons. Primarily, most of our users are already accustomed to the KDE desktop and by our experience new users seem to find it easier to migrate to a KDE based desktop coming from Windows.

This doesn't mean that there won't be any room for other desktop environments. A lot of these can easily be installed via our repository. Though, if there is interest in developing other desktop environments that could be possible too.

How about NTFS Support, will you include and enable it by default? Kasi sa BL5 naalala ko kailangan pa i-edit yung "fstab" to mount ntfs partition.

I believe BL5 *does* support reading of NTFS partitions out of the box. It doesn't support writing to it without modifications to fstab

Tama po kayo.BL5 have NTFS read support. In BL6 will you still use EXT3 as the default filesystem or use EXT4? In Debian Squeeze, I think BTRFS is now included.
